What are curettes?

Surgical curettes are spoon-shaped instruments used to clear a bony cavity: granulation tissue from a socket, a periapical lesion after apicoectomy, or soft-tissue remnants before grafting. They are not periodontal curettes — the blade is heavier, the working edge is a continuous spoon rather than a paired cutting edge, and they are shaped to scrape bone rather than root surface.

Choosing the right curette

Size the spoon to the defect. A Lucas #85 clears a small periapical lesion where a #88 would not reach the walls; the larger sizes suit a molar socket. The Molt double-ended #2/4 covers two sizes in one instrument and is a sensible first purchase. Note the naming overlap: a Molt curette is a different instrument from a Molt periosteal elevator, and both appear in this catalogue.
