What are impression trays?

Impression trays carry impression material to the arch and hold it in position while it sets. The two decisions are retention and coverage. Perforated trays let material extrude through the holes and lock mechanically, which suits alginate; solid trays rely on adhesive and are the choice for elastomeric materials where dimensional accuracy matters and material escaping through perforations would distort the impression.

How the impression trays range is organised

Full arch, upper:

U-1 X-large, U-2 large, U-3 medium, U-4 small and U-5 X-small, in both perforated and solid.

Full arch, lower:

L-1 X-large, L-2 large, L-3 medium, L-4 small and L-5 X-small, in both perforated and solid.

Partial and quadrant:

P-30 left upper, P-31 right upper, P-32 anterior lower, P-33 anterior upper, P-U universal swivel — perforated and solid.

Sets:

Sets of five upper, five lower, five partial, and sets of ten covering 1–5 upper and lower in perforated or solid.

Choosing the right impression tray

Perforated for alginate, solid with adhesive for VPS and polyether. Buy sets rather than individual sizes when equipping an operatory — the size you need is the one you do not have, and the set-of-ten covers both arches across the full size range. Partial trays are worth stocking for single-quadrant restorative work: a full-arch impression for one crown wastes material and is less comfortable for the patient.
