Root Canal Pluggers & Condensers
What are root canal pluggers & condensers?
Pluggers condense gutta-percha vertically in the canal during obturation, compacting the material apically and laterally to fill the space. The working end is flat and non-cutting, in contrast to a spreader's point. Sizes run from fine apical instruments to larger pluggers used for backfilling the coronal portion.
How the root canal pluggers & condensers range is organised
- Double-ended, by size:
- #1/3 fine, #5/7 intermediate, #9/11 for coronal condensation, in firm-grip hollow handles.
- Posterior access:
- Posterior root canal plugger #9/11, Elite condenser #9/11 in a 9.5mm hollow handle.
- ISO sized:
- Endodontic condenser/plugger in ISO sizing to correspond with file sizes.
Choosing the right root canal pluggers & condenser
Fit the plugger before you obturate: it should reach within a few millimetres of working length without binding on the canal walls. A plugger that binds transmits force to the walls instead of the gutta-percha, which is how vertical condensation cracks a root. Work from smaller sizes apically to larger ones coronally as you backfill.
