What are endodontic spreaders?

Spreaders carry a smooth, pointed, tapered working end used to compact gutta-percha laterally, creating space alongside the master cone for accessory cones. The point is the functional difference from a plugger, which is flat: a spreader wedges material sideways rather than compacting it apically.

Choosing the right endodontic spreader

Select a spreader that reaches within 1–2mm of working length beside the master cone without binding — if it binds short, accessory cones cannot be placed where they are needed. Use steady, sustained pressure rather than a sharp push; excessive lateral force on a curved root is a recognised cause of vertical root fracture.
