What are universal curettes?

Universal curettes carry a blade set at 90° to the shank with two working cutting edges, so a single instrument adapts to all surfaces of a tooth by changing approach rather than changing instrument. Fewer instruments cover the mouth than with a Gracey set; the trade-off is that a universal cannot reach as far subgingivally into a deep pocket without risking the pocket wall.

How the universal curettes range is organised

Columbia:

#13/14 in standard and hollow handles, #2L/2R and #4L/4R.

Barnhart:

#1/2 and #5/6 in firm-grip hollow handles.

McCall's:

#13/14, #13S/14S, #17/18 and #17S/18S — the S variants with slimmer blades.

Other:

Younger Good #7/8, Goldman Fox scaler/curette #12GF, and #2GF anterior/premolar, #3GF posterior and #4GF molar.

Choosing the right universal curette

Universals are efficient for general debridement and moderate pocket depths. Columbia #13/14 and Barnhart #1/2 are the common starting pair. Move to Gracey curettes for deep pockets and definitive root planing, where area-specific angulation genuinely reaches surfaces a universal cannot. The slimmer S-variant McCall's blades access narrow pockets that a standard blade will not enter.
