What are pin & ligature cutters?

Ligature cutters trim ligature wire and pins close to the bracket, leaving a short end that can be tucked without irritating soft tissue. Fine tips are needed to reach into the bracket area and cut close; tungsten carbide inserts hold that fine edge against repeated cutting of hard wire, which plain steel does not.

Choosing the right pin & ligature cutter

Micro and mini heads get close to the bracket, which is the whole point — a cutter that cannot reach leaves a tail long enough to catch tissue. Keep a separate hard wire cutter for heavy archwire; cutting hardened wire with a fine ligature cutter chips the edge and then it will not cut ligature cleanly either.
