What are contouring pliers?

Contouring pliers shape the margin and body of a preformed or stainless steel crown so it adapts to the tooth. Paired convex and concave beaks put a controlled curve into thin metal without creasing it. The degree of curve in the beaks determines how tight a contour the plier can produce.

Choosing the right contouring plier

Start with a slight-curve plier for general adaptation and reach for a heavy curve only where a tight cervical contour is needed — over-contouring a crown margin is harder to correct than under-contouring it. Work progressively around the circumference rather than forcing the full curve in one squeeze.
