Pre-Cleaning
Before any instrument enters the autoclave, it must be thoroughly pre-cleaned to remove debris and bioburden. This step is critical because organic material can shield microorganisms from the sterilization process.
- Rinse instruments immediately after use to prevent blood and debris from drying
- Use an enzymatic cleaner or ultrasonic cleaner for thorough decontamination
- Inspect each instrument visually before packaging
- Never overload the ultrasonic bath — ensure instruments are fully submerged
Packaging
Proper packaging ensures instruments remain sterile after the autoclave cycle is complete. Use FDA-cleared sterilization pouches or wraps and ensure they are sealed correctly.
- Place instruments in pouches with the paper side up for visibility
- Do not overpack pouches — steam must contact all surfaces
- Include a chemical indicator inside each package
