The Importance of Daily Maintenance
Daily maintenance extends the lifespan of your dental instruments, ensures patient safety, and protects your investment. A well-maintained instrument performs better, reduces clinician fatigue, and minimizes the risk of instrument failure during procedures.
Cleaning Protocols
Immediate Post-Use Cleaning
The moment an instrument is used, the clock starts ticking. Blood and bioburden dry quickly and become much harder to remove after even 15–20 minutes.
- Pre-soak instruments in an enzymatic solution within minutes of use
- Never allow instruments to dry with organic material on them
- Use a soft nylon brush for manual scrubbing — never steel wool or abrasive pads
- Always scrub under water to minimize aerosol generation
Ultrasonic Cleaning
Ultrasonic cleaners use high-frequency sound waves to create cavitation bubbles that dislodge debris from instrument surfaces, including areas impossible to reach by hand.
- Change the ultrasonic solution at least once per day or more frequently with heavy use
- Follow the manufacturer's recommended cycle time (typically 6–10 minutes)
- Do not mix dissimilar metals in the same cycle
- Rinse instruments thoroughly after ultrasonic cleaning
Lubrication
Hinged instruments such as scissors, hemostats, and forceps require regular lubrication to maintain smooth operation and prevent corrosion.
- Apply a water-soluble instrument lubricant (instrument milk) after cleaning and before sterilization
- Open and close hinged instruments several times to work the lubricant into the joint
- Never use industrial oils — only lubricants rated for autoclave use
Inspection Checklist
Before packaging for sterilization, inspect every instrument:
- Check for visible debris or staining
- Test cutting edges for sharpness (use a plastic test stick)
- Verify hinges open and close smoothly without resistance
- Look for signs of corrosion, pitting, or cracks
- Confirm tips are aligned and not bent
- Remove any instrument that fails inspection for repair or replacement
