Periotomes have a thin, sharp blade that slides down into the periodontal ligament space and cuts the fibers around the root, loosening the tooth with little force on the surrounding bone. Commonly used where the socket will receive an implant.

The outward angle reaches root surfaces that a straight blade can't. Angled-in version: 42852.
